The Forgotten History behind Fathers Day
Fathers day started with a girl who thought about honoring the man for unconditional support and love. It started back in the 1900s in America. Now, one must think that the men honored for father’s day would be readily accepted and implemented. But it was not the case.
Against Mother’s day, which was officially recognized before the recognition of Fathers day, men didn’t perceive themselves to be like mothers who were honored for their gentle, tender maternal side for their children.
Men found it too foppish to celebrate a day for fathers like Mother’s day. To put in other words, one historian wrote, “scoffed at the holiday’s sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness with followers and gift-giving, or they derided the proliferation of such holidays as a commercial gimmick to sell more products-often paid by the father himself.”
The men smirked at the idea of celebrating fatherhood with followers who were opposed o what portrayed manliness. However, the thought evolved.
How it all started?
It all started on an ordinary day on July 5 in West Virginia. In 1908, on this date, many men died in an unfortunate mining incident in U.S. history.
A woman named Grace Golden Clayton proposed a memorial service to honor all those men who died in the incident. Not many joined the service, and it was less known among the public while another girl dedicated herself to honor the world’.
After this incident, in 1909, another woman named Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane from Washington decided to observe fathers like Mother’s Day. She was deeply inspired by Anna Jarvis, the founder of Mother’s Day.
She wanted to honor her father, who singlehandedly raised 5 kids in spite of being a farmer and a Civil War veteran. She came up with the idea of celebrating fatherhood while attending Mother’s day church service.
She arranged meetings with Spokane Ministerial Association and YMCA to designate a Sunday to celebrate fathers day. She asked them to keep June 5, her father’s birthday, to observe as father’s day. The day got shifted to the third Sunday of June to observe as father’s day. On June 10, 1910, the world witnessed the celebration of fatherhood for the first time. Sonora dedicated presents to disabled fathers and YMCA boys decorated and dedicated the city with roses.
This event in Spokane was popularized among the public, and Sonora’s dream came true. Subsequently, the third Sunday of June started observing as Fathers day and a national holiday for the first time in history.
In 1966, President Laydon implemented an executive order declaring father’s day as a national holiday. And afterward, in 1972, President Richard Nixon officially launched an act making it a national holiday.
